Forklift Accidents at Work

Forklifts are the MOST DANGEROUS form of workplace transport in the UK, according to the RTITB website.




The RTITB states that forklifts are one of the most common MHE in warehousing and logistics, and yet they are also the most dangerous with a reported 8,000 workplace incidents annually. British Safety Council quote statistics that show lift-trucks are responsible for 25% of all transport related workplace injuries, more than HGVs or LGVs.


Approx. 1,300 employees - 5 A DAY - end up hospitalised with life changing injuries following forklift accidents.


Common causes of forklift accidents:

× Lack of training × Driving at speed × Poor forklift maintenance × Poor communication

x Irresponsible behaviour × Disorderly workplace × Ignorance


Potential ways to prevent accidents:

 Correct and detailed training  Limit forklift speed  Restrict pedestrians

 Address employee attitude and behaviours and irresponsible driving  Risk assessments  Ensure appropriate parking location  Encourage Communication

 Educate managers and supervisors  Follow the HSE
